For the first time ever, I installed Ubuntu it seems useful.
Like I could really use this on a day to day basis.
Of course, if they really want it to be a normal person destop replacement I would recommend fixing:
1. Firefox fonts. They’re weird by default
2. Monitor detection so you can run over 640X480 by default. THIS IS A BIG DEAL
3. Nvidia driver stuff is a pain. Maybe you could default the all important control panel to on.
4. More comprehensive explanation of the theming.
5. NTFS support out of the box.
All in all though, it’s not too bad.
Beats the shit out if vista. I nuked it last night, reinstalled XP and now Ubuntu as well.

(Yes)
2. Monitor detection so you can run over 640X480 by default. THIS IS A BIG DEAL
(Is there. Works for everyone who isn’t you. Please report a bug with your monitor and graphics card dets)
3. Nvidia driver stuff is a pain. Maybe you could default the all important control panel to on.
(Yes, though there are political issues in the way. Basically, NVidia aren’t playing ball sufficently)
4. More comprehensive explanation of the theming.
(Yes)
5. NTFS support out of the box.
(No. MS haven’t documented NTFS. Linux geeks have worked out how to read files, replace files, or rename files and stuff, but adding new stuff to the filesystem without fucking up the NTFS database is currently a little way away. This is the reason not even OS-X’s wonder-toy that lets you run OS-X and Windows side by side supports NTFS writing yet)
Not having any problem with Vista Business x64… except that Cisco won’t develop a 64-bit client for VPN-3K (which campus uses).
I thought Ubuntu was no longer doing FF because of some non-open-source thingy with the logo.

>>> 100% agreed. I tried Ubuntu for the 1st time last week, and this is what disturbed me most.
I love ubuntu. It works, and its clean (unlike windows). I found it hilarious that windows is coded on Unix >.>. “But why Mr. Gates, dont you trust your own code with your next version of Winblows?”
I agree with most of your reasonings. The fonts CAN be a little weird, try messing with your framerates (Seems odd, but it can make a differance). And as for nVidia, Ubuntu is dedicated to “Free Open Source Software” and nVidia’s drivers are not FOSS, so they need to be enabled manually >.>
I’ve been using Ubuntu for probably close to a year and a half now (no Windows at all). Its better in all respects for me because development is easy with that noice G++ compiler and Galaxies will run in wine (with a little assistance
)
